From Kittiwake Cottage it
takes about 40 mins to walk along the coastal footpath to Tintagel
with magnificent
views
all the way, and many reminders of the history of slate quarrying which
took place along the coast until early in the 20th Century. Tintagel
is a small village with many associations with the legend of King Arthur
and The Old Post Office in its centre is a National Trust Property.
Tintagel Head (English Heritage) and the ruins of the Norman Castle
built by the Earls of Cornwall can be explored for there is much historical
interest here including evidence of trading settlements as far back
as the Dark Ages. On the nearby cliffs stands St Materiana's church,
a fine example of a Norman church, and excavations in the churchyard
have shown evidence of a previous Saxon Church and an early Christian
burial site.
From the cottage there are wonderful walks along the coast path. Of note there is a very challenging walk, graded as severe in the Coastal Footpath handbook, to Port Isaac passing Tregardock beach on the way.
